Two-stop rules in Monaco uncovered ― What really happened during the Grand Prix

On June 1st, an F1 event took place, the Spanish Grand Prix, which generated a lot of comments among experts and fans because of a technical problem with a Mercedes car. The incident, which was not the first involving Mercedes this season, not only compromised the performance of the driver involved but also brought up concerns about the reliability of the team’s engines for the rest of this year. Find out who the driver involved in the accident is and what exactly happened to the Mercedes car.

Problems with Mercedes cars and their implications

The 2025 Spanish Grand Prix brought surprises and concerns for the Mercedes team. During the competition, a technical failure occurred in the engine of the young driver Kimi Antonelli’s car. The problem began showing signs right at the end of the race, due to a failure in the power unit at turn 10 on lap 55, which forced the driver to stop with smoke coming out of the car.

The Italian driver was on course to earn valuable points for Mercedes, occupying seventh position in the race when he was surprised by the issue with his car. This problem raised a red alert for the German team, especially since this is not the first incident to occur in Antonelli’s car during this Formula 1 season.

In Imola, Italy, the 18-year-old driver faced another unexpected issue with his car – this time, a problem with the accelerator forced him to retire from the race, despite having recovered from a poor qualifying session. Following these two incidents, the Mercedes team is now carrying out a detailed investigation to determine the cause of the latest failure.

Mercedes struggles with ongoing technical setbacks

The constant issues with Mercedes cars, which have been recurring and increasingly frustrating, indicate that something may not be working well within the team’s structure, and these persistent difficulties could end up seriously harming the team’s performance, especially during this highly competitive season.

Despite the recent updates and adjustments that were made to Antonelli’s vehicle for the Spanish GP, after the incident at Imola and a bad performance in Monaco, the team is trying to identify the cause of the failure so that it can implement preventive measures to avoid recurrences. Perhaps the modifications made to improve performance were the cause of the incident.

Mercedes fans and management have clearly shown their growing dissatisfaction with the current situation – a scenario which can seriously compromise their future performance and the overall reliability of Mercedes cars in the ongoing competition.

Behind the numbers: The championship consequences and Antonelli’s future

This whole situation, besides being frustrating for those who follow and are fans of the team, is even worse for Antonelli himself. Young and new to the competition with great potential to compete with veteran names, such as Hamilton and Hulkenberg, but who has had his performance hampered by technical issues with the car, not linked to his driving skills.

While teams such as McLaren and Ferrari are showing progress, Mercedes needs to play catch-up to resolve its internal problems and remain competitive this season, providing a good and reliable car for Antonelli to show his potential. The ongoing investigation will dictate what Mercedes’ future will be this season.

In a competition like Formula 1, which grows and develops more every year, the difference between getting a place on the podium or not lies in the small details. Failures like those that have been happening at Mercedes are potentially decisive for a poor performance by the team, which needs to urgently make progress to maintain its possible chances of a podium finish in the end and reaffirm its position as one of the highest forces in world motorsport.
