Ferrari have opened a new factory in Maranello, the new factory will be referred to as the “e-building”. What might surprise you is what they will be making in the new factory. The e-building will produce Ferrari’s first electric vehicle(hence the nickname). While the rest of the automotive world embraced the electrification of their cars, Ferrari stated a few years ago that they are not interested in the electric car. It would appear that prejudice is no more. The new factory will produce a range of Ferrari components for their cars, but it will also see the world’s first electric Ferrari roll out of its doors.

What is Ferrari’s attitude towards the electric vehicle?

Ferrari have been globally recognized as the top supercar maker amongst a wide range of manufacturers. Their passion and love for their vehicles have been evident from the start. Enzo Ferrari started the iconic prancing horse after splitting from Alfa Romeo and starting his own racing team. Ferrari are arguably the most successful luxury car maker that the world has ever seen.

Any company that attempts to make a supercar, whether that be traditional internal combustion or electric powered, will always compare their cars design and performance to Ferrari. However, they have stubbornly steered well clear of the electrification trend that has swept up the world’s automotive manufacturers. Instead they focused on perfecting the existing engines and technology they had in place.

However, that is all about to change. With the new regulations in the F1, all the engine manufacturers have been forced to produce engines for the 2026 season that use 50% regular power and 50% alternative fuel. With the advanced state of the EV sector, that will most likely be the choice most engine manufacturers go for. So the concept of Ferrari entering the EV market was not that far off.

What is so different about the new Ferrari factory in Maranello?

After their troubles this season in the F1, the new factory proved to be a necessity to produce engines that could compete in 2026. Ferrari would no doubt see this as an opportunity to make engines for their new supercars as well. The world, yes even the super car world, is fast approaching the end of the traditional internal combustion engine. The alternative fuel sector is overtaking the gasoline sector like Piastri passing Hamilton(sorry Ferrari).

So Ferrari have finally caved and joined the electric evolution of the automotive industry. The new e-building will produce their new Purosangue and the SF90 and production has already started. The new factory is 42.500 square meters over three floors and will employ at least 300 of Ferrari’s best. The factory will assist Ferrari’s plans to increase the amount of cars they make as last year they made 13,752 deliveries, a slight increase of 0.7% compared to the previous year.

Ferrari’s have never been cheap. The cheapest you could find is The Ferrari 456 GT, a V12 Grand Tourer that cost around $47,000. Nowadays an entry level Ferrari could set you back for $346,950. So the electric Ferrari we are about to see for the first time will, like all other electric vehicles, be quite expensive. Ferrari state that their EV will most likely cost around $561 734.

Is this the end for the traditional internal combustion engine?

The electrification of the world is reaching new markets, the world understands the need for a change and move away from the ever troublesome fossil fuel industries. While Ferrari put up a fight, they have now accepted that reality. As evident with their new e-building that will move the iconic Italian car maker into the next generation of cars. Everyone loves a Ferrari, the excitement the world feels at the idea of an electric Ferrari is palpable. We can only imagine how incredible the electric vehicle that Ferrari decide to make will be.
