Special tax refund payments of up to $500 could be arriving for all qualifying citizens in one state. As per House Bill 112, citizens in Georgia could very well be receiving this once-off payment soon, which was signed by Governor Brian Kemp. The reason for this special, once-off payment is to offer back a portion of the surplus revenue to Georgians. All eligible Georgians should check the payment date, as they could run into a few extra dollars sooner than expected. Citizens in Georgia are requested to check the eligibility criteria first before they eagerly wait for a payment that they are not eligible for.

Understanding eligibility criteria for this once-off payment

While all Georgians are in line to receive this once-off payment, there are a few factors to consider that set those who will receive this refund apart from those who won’t be receiving this refund, and as per the criteria:

  • Citizens who are full-time residents in Georgia will receive this refund.
  • Residents in Georgia would need to have filed their 2023 and 2024 state income tax returns to be deemed eligible.
  • Citizens cannot be dependents claiming on someone else’s tax returns.
  • Citizens must not owe the state any money, as the refund could be reduced or completely offset if a citizen owes the state any unpaid taxes or has any other outstanding state debts.

Citizens who meet the criteria will certainly receive this once-off payment and can look forward to payment day soon.

How much will citizens in Georgia receive?

While it is considered to be the up to $500 tax refund, not all citizens in Georgia will receive exactly $500. The amount that each citizen receives depends on their 2023 tax filing status and can be noted as follows:

  • $250 for single filers or married individuals filing separately.
  • $375 for heads of household.
  • $500 for married couples filing jointly.

All refunds received will not incur any taxes, and if taxpayers met the tax filing deadline, they will surely see their tax payments soon. The first group of citizens received their payments in early June already.

When should citizens in Georgia expect payment?

According to the Georgia Department of Revenue, payments for eligible citizens started being sent through in the first week of June 2025 already. Those who were in time to file their tax return would have seen payment being made into their bank accounts already.

Now the third round of refund checks is being processed. For this group of eligible Georgians, no date has been set in stone, yet all refunds will be paid out by late June. The surplus tax refund eligibility tool can be utilized by citizens to check the status of their refund. To use this tool, a Tax ID number, a Social Security number, and the federally adjusted gross income are necessary.

Like with all tax refund payments, processing time differs for those who filed electronically and for those who filed by mail.

The reason why Georgians can receive this refund

Governor Brian Kemp has shown his loyalty in terms of giving back to citizens in Georgia through this $1 billion refund initiative. The refunds show that this is one state where the state’s resources are managed effectively and one state where the focus is on giving back to taxpayers who have worked so hard.

These $500 payments are part of the state’s broader strategy to ensure tax relief for citizens. From the next tax season, citizens in the state will see tax cuts as per House Bill 111. Both initiatives work towards helping citizens in the state to stay financially afloat.
