  • Alma Mater: Roanoke College (BA, 1971) / Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (MA, 2000)
  • Played at Division II Roanoke in Salem, Virginia under head coach Charles Moir, where he was an All-American
    • Was the first African-American player in the program’s history, helping lead the Maroons to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance as a freshman in 1968
  • First coaching position was at Albermarle HS (VA), where he won two district championships in three years
  • In 1976, Allen reunited with his college coach Moir’s by joining his staff as as assistant at Virginia Tech
    • Worked for Moir for eleven seasons and was then tabbed to replace him as head coach starting in 1987
    • Won 56 games in four years but failed to reach the postseason at VT
  • Next spent nine seasons as the head coach at Tennessee State, winning two OVC titles and twice reaching the NCAAs
  • Was the head coach at Howard for five seasons, going just 52-93 during that tenure
  • Spent three years as an assistant coach: one under Byron Samuels at Radford and two under Randy Monroe at UMBC
  • Final coaching position was a six-year tenure at Maryland Eastern Shore
    • Went 42-139 during that tenure, failing to win more than 11 games in any season
  • Inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Roanoke College Hall of Fame in 1976
