- Hometown: Collingswood, New Jersey
- Alma Mater: University of Maryland (BS, 1968)
- Played point guard at Maryland under head coach Bud Millikan and was named the Terrapins’ team captain in 1967
- First coaching job was at Woodrow Wilson HS in Camden, NJ, where he first coached under long-time NCAA head coach Tom Davis and then won a NJ State Title as head coach in 1972
- Spent six seasons as a collegiate assistant to Davis, five at Lafayette and one at Boston College, before getting the head coaching position at American in 1978
- Went to two NITs in four seasons at American, then one NIT and two NCAA Tournaments in four seasons at Boston College
- Took over at Ohio State in 1986, where he led the Buckeyes to an NCAA Tournament and two NIT berths in three years
- Became the head coach at his alma mater Maryland in 1989, a position he would hold for 22 seasons until his retirement in 2011
- Took the Terps to back-to-back Final Fours (2001 & 2002), winning the NCAA National Championship in 2002
- Was a fixture in the postseason, taking his Maryland teams to 14 NCAA Tournaments and 4 NITs
- Coached 28 players at Maryland that would go on to be drafted to the NBA, four of which were taken in the lottery
- Inducted into both the National Collegiate and Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in 2014
