George Ivory named head coach at alma mater Mississippi Valley State

On Monday, George Ivory was named the new head coach at his alma mater, Mississippi Valley State.

The former Arkansas-Pine Bluff head coach returned to MVSU in an administrative role last summer but stepped into the interim head coaching role for the last three games of this season following the suspension of former head coach Lindsey Hunter, who stepped down last week.

“Coach Ivory brings a wealth of knowledge to our basketball program as our 12th men’s basketball coach,” MVSU President Dr. Jerryl Briggs said in a statement. “We are excited about what he will bring to our program as an alum who has experienced great success during his time as a coach in the SWAC.”

Ivory played for the Delta Devils for four seasons under head coach Lafayette Stribling and was named SWAC Co-POY in 1987. He is MVSU’s all-time leader in both steals and assists.

He spent a total of five seasons as an assistant at MVSU earlier in his career before being named the head coach at UAPB in 2008. He took the Golden Lions to the NCAA Tournament in 2010 and won 127 games over 13 seasons there.
