- Alma Mater: Texas Tech University (BA, 1959 & MA, 1965)
- Played basketball at Texas Tech from 1956-59 under longtime head coach Polk Robison
- Started his coaching career in Lubbock, leading the Monterey HS boys’ team for four seasons (92-18 overall)
- Hired in 1967 as the head coach at then-Division II Houston Baptist
- Was 32-43 in three seasons at HBU, with his best season being a 16-12 finish in 1968-69
- Joined Bob Bass’s staff at Texas Tech in 1970, then took over as interim head coach mid-season following Bass’s resignation
- Went 8-5 over the remainder of the season and was named the permanent head coach in the summer
- Was 325-262 overall in 20+ seasons as the Red Raiders’ head coach, winning two Southwest titles and three Southwest Tournament crowns
- Reached the postseason five times (four NCAA, one NIT), including a trip to the 1976 Sweet Sixteen
- Received Southwest COY honors five times, more than any coach in the conference’s history
- Stepped away from coaching in 1991 to become the assistant athletic director at Texas Tech
- Took over as athletic director in 1996, holding that position until his retirement in 2011
- Hired a number of notable coaches as AD, including Mike Leach (football) and Bob Knight
- Spent nearly 50 years at Texas Tech as a student-athlete, coach and administrator
