  • Died January 1951
  • Hometown: Mishawaka, Indiana
  • Alma Mater: University of Illinois (BS, 1928)
  • Played basketball, football and baseball at Mishawaka HS (IN); served as a captain in both basketball and football
  • Graduated from Illinois, where he played football for Hall of Fame head coach Robert Zuppke; also ran track
  • First job was at Athens HS in Elmira, PA, where he coached all sports at the school
  • Returned to Illinois in 1929 to be an assistant freshman football coach and teach physical education
  • First arrived at Duke in 1931, teaching physical education and serving as director of intramural sports
    • Became the first soccer coach at Duke in 1935, serving in that capacity through 1945
    • Was a basketball, football and track official for many years; later served as President of SoCon Football Officials
  • Joined the Blue Devil’s basketball staff as an assistant under Eddie Cameron in 1940
  • In 1949, Gerard’s health began to decline and he took a leave of absence following the 1949-50 season
    • Passed away in January 1951 at the age of 47 from cancer
