- Alma Mater: University of Illinois (BS, 1928)
- Played basketball, football and baseball at Mishawaka HS (IN); served as a captain in both basketball and football
- Graduated from Illinois, where he played football for Hall of Fame head coach Robert Zuppke; also ran track
- First job was at Athens HS in Elmira, PA, where he coached all sports at the school
- Returned to Illinois in 1929 to be an assistant freshman football coach and teach physical education
- First arrived at Duke in 1931, teaching physical education and serving as director of intramural sports
- Became the first soccer coach at Duke in 1935, serving in that capacity through 1945
- Was a basketball, football and track official for many years; later served as President of SoCon Football Officials
- Joined the Blue Devil’s basketball staff as an assistant under Eddie Cameron in 1940
- Took over as head coach in 1942, going 131-78 in eight seasons at the helm
- Won the SoCon title in 1943 and claimed SoCon Tournament crowns in 1944 and 1946
- In 1949, Gerard’s health began to decline and he took a leave of absence following the 1949-50 season
- Passed away in January 1951 at the age of 47 from cancer
