- First coaching experiences were as a graduate assistant (1973-75) and later assistant coach (1977-81) under legendary Indiana Hoosiers head coach Bob Knight; was on staff for IU’s 1981 NCAA National Championship
- Hired in 1981 to be the head coach at George Washington, leading the Colonials for four seasons
- Went 58-55 overall; notable players he coached include NBA draftee Mike Brown and future collegiate head coaches Mike Brey and Joe Dooley
- Gimelstob, who was Jewish, also coached the United States teams for several years in the Maccabiah Games; was the head coach in 1985 when the US won a gold medal in Israel
- Moved into the private sector in 1990, owning and operating McDonald’s restaurants in Maryland
- Passed away in 2017; survive by his wife, Sandy, and their two children, Rikki and Ross
