High Point parts ways with head coach G.G. Smith

High Point announced on Friday afternoon that it was parting ways with head men’s basketball coach G.G. Smith. The Panthers were 17-20 over 1+ seasons under Smith, who took over last February when Tubby Smith, his father, announced his retirement.

Smith joined the HPU staff in 2018 when his father was hired to be the head coach, which marked a return to the elder Smith’s alma mater. He was named interim head coach for the remainder of last season plus all of this season. The Panthers were eliminated in the first round of the Big South Tournament on Wednesday.

“I would like to thank GG Smith for his leadership and commitment to our men’s basketball program and the High Point community over the last five years,” AD Dan Hauser said in the release.

Hauser will begin a national search for a permanent replacement at head coach.
