  • Alma Mater: University of Georgia (BS, 1999) / University of Kentucky (M.Ed, 2002)
  • The son of legendary head coach Tubby Smith, G.G. was born in Maryland and grew up in North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Kentucky and Tulsa as his father’s coaching career progressed
  • Graduated from Cascia Hall Prep (OK) before heading to the University of Georgia to play for his father
    • Played for four years at UGA, two for Tubby and two more for Ron Jirsa after Tubby left for Kentucky
  • After graduating, he moved back to Lexington, KY to be an assistant coach at Lexington Catholic HS for the 1999-2000 season
  • Spent two years on his dad‘s staff at UK as a graduate assistant, also earning his master’s degree; part of two Sweet Sixteen trips
  • Hired in 2002 to be an assistant coach under Mike Sutton at Tennessee Tech, serving in that capacity for two years
  • After stints at D-II Armstrong Atlantic (GA) under Jeff Burkhamer and D-III Johns Hopkins (MD) under Bill Nelson, Smith was hired to be an assistant at D-I Loyola (MD) under head coach Jimmy Patsos
  • Patsos left for Siena in 2013 and Smith was elevated to head coach as his replacement
    • Went 56-98 in five seasons at the helm, headlined by a CBI Quarterfinal finish in 2017
    • Resigned in March 2018 after a 9-22 (6-12) season; never finished above .500 while at Loyola (MD)
  • Joined his father’s staff at High Point in 2018 as associate head coach
    • In February 2022, G.G. named interim head coach after Tubby decided to retire following a second bout with COVID-19
    • Served as interim coach for six games and then the entire following season, but was let go in March 2023 – went 17-20 overall
  • Along with his wife, Lorie, has one daughter and one son
