Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing fired after eleven seasons

Indiana State AD Sherard Clinkscales held a joint press conference Monday with now former head coach Greg Lansing to announce that the two parties would be parting ways. Lansing had been with the head coach since 2010 but has spent a total of 18 seasons working with the Indiana State program. In between assistant stints at ISU, Lansing also worked on Steve Alford‘s staff at Iowa from 1999-2006.

“I would like to thank Greg and his staff for their dedication to Indiana State University over the last decade,” Clinkscales said in an earlier press release. “Greg has directed this program with class and dignity, and represented the Sycamores well in the community and on the court. It is simply time to have a change in the leadership of this program.”

A rolling extension clause – which automatically added a year to the end of his deal after each season – was removed from Lansing’s contract a few years back and with contract up after the 2020-21 season, the school declined to offer him an extension.

“While I am disappointed, I understand the business side of college athletics,” Lansing said in a statement. “I love Indiana State and Terre Haute and always will. It’s a part of who I am.

“I also look forward to supporting Indiana State basketball and all of our teams moving forward. We truly appreciate the support we have received as well as the friendships we have made. We couldn’t be more blessed and thankful.”

Lansing was 181-164 during his tenure, winning the MVC Tournament to earn a NCAA bid in his first year but failing to finish above .500 in any season between 2014 and 2019. Things had improved over the last couple years, but apparently that was not enough for Clinkscales to offer him a new deal.
