  • Alma Mater: University of Northern Iowa (BA, 1988) / US Sports Academy (MSS, 1994)
  • The Iowa-native played at Northern Iowa, first under James Berry and then under Eldon Miller
  • Started his coaching career right away, joining Rich Glas’ staff at North Dakota (then Division II) in 1989
  • Became a head coach in 1994 at D-II Wayne State College (NE), going 116-53 overall in six seasons
  • Spent one season as the head coach at then D-II North Dakota State before returning to his alma mater Northern Iowa in 2001
    • Had great success at UNI, leading the Panthers to three straight NCAA Tournaments (including two at-large bids)
  • Was head coach at Iowa State for four seasons but was unable to match his success from UNI; finished below .500 each year
  • Returned to the mid-major level in 2010 as the head coach at Creighton, taking the Bluejays to the NCAA Tournament three-straight years (including the programs first year in a major conference: the new Big East)
    • Coached his son, Doug McDermott, for four seasons (one CBI, three NCAAs); Doug was a three-time First-Team All-American, consensus National POY in 2014 and got drafted 11th overall in the 2014 NBA Draft
    • Lead the Jays back to the NCAA Tournament in 2017, capping off a 25-10 seasons that saw the team ranked as high as #7
    • Won a share of the Big East title in 2020, a first for the program, going 24-7 (13-5) and earning Big East COY honors
  • Along with his wife, Theresa, has three children
