- Alma Mater: Hartwick College (BA, 1934)
- Graduated from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, and began coaching in 1935 at the high school level
- Went 78-29 in four years at a small school in Georgetown, NY then worked at Norwich HS (NY)
- Returned to alma mater Hartwick in 1947, going 47-18 in three years at the helm
- Hired in 1950 to be the head coach at Duke, a role he held for nine seasons
- Was 165-78 overall at Duke, going to the NCAA Tournament once (1955) and winning two ACC titles
- Left Duke for Texas in 1959, going 125-73 in eight seasons with the Longhorns
- Won three Southwest titles and reached two NCAA Tournaments (both Sweet Sixteens)
- Passed away in 1985 after a long illness at age 73
