- Played basketball at Oklahoma for head coach Bennie Owen; also played football for the Sooners
- Before arriving at OU, McDermott served in the Army Air Corps at Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas
- Spent 17 years as the Sooners’ head coach, going 185-106 during that tenure
- Went 18-0 in 1927-28 to win the MVC title and then a year later, the first year of the Big Eight (then Big Six), went 13-2 (10-0) and won the Big Six title
- That 1928 team was led by Bruce Drake, an All-American who would later succeed McDermott as head coach
- Resigned as coach in 1938 and took a job as head of OU’s physical education department
