Just when you thought motorsports did not need fuel types like hydrogen, they prove you wrong. Speed is important, and so is what comes from the engine of the sports car. While racing competitions are common, loved, and lucrative, it was very important for countries like Japan to explore alternatives that can best suit their manufacturing beyond just electric cars. Today, we say that ‘Hydrogen powers the future’ because it is being understood better as time goes by, and because it emits water, it is the perfect fuel to power a racing car, knowing that emissions are just water, a natural, clean substance.
Electric vehicles have been the main character, but hydrogen is Japan’s new favourite
We have been so immersed in electric vehicles that we forget that there are other options that could be utilised for the good, too. EVs are great and have been proven to be clean, but in some circumstances, hydrogen is better. Yes, it has its own issues that still need attention, but it has not been given up on because of how much it can transform the global community and various sectors.
Before I get to the heavy stuff, let’s talk about how hydrogen is so essential for this prototype. Basically, a racing car should be fast, right? Meaning that whatever makes up a racing car should be lightweight; therefore, the engine is the main character here, and since it drives the car, it also determines the speed based on its weight. Hydrogen is perfect because it is lightweight and clean. Japan just found its superpower.
The “GR LH2 Racing Concept”, powered by liquid hydrogen, was unveiled by Toyota Gazoo Racing
Toyota unveiled something that we did not anticipate. It is a brand full of good surprises, and most of the time, we see how it unveils new big SUVs and other vehicle types, but this time around, it decided to tap into something more interesting for racers and race lovers. By the way, this is liquid hydrogen, not just hydrogen. Toyota stood out because it made the imperfect perfect.
Most car brands are running, working, and researching around hydrogen, and Toyota is unveiling a car, already done, tested, and ready to do its tasks. It is called the GR H2 Racing Concept, and the future just got better. The motorsports world is growing so fast, and Toyota is keeping up with the demand by making something so perfect for the time that we are in.
A unique Japanese-manufactured hydrogen car consisting of special components
- The main goal is to integrate fun and a carbon-free environment. Racing to be exciting and sustainable at the same time.
- Production in collaboration with internal and external supporters and contributors.
- It is being made to enter the famous Le Mans race as early as 2027.
- This could be the very first-ever liquid hydrogen racing car, globally. If no other car brand creates something similar or better.
- Toyota is not letting hydrogen go because it has expanded even to motorcycles (310 HP packed into a hydrogen beast bike).
Japan has also produced a combination of hydrogen and oxygen in one engine. We can see that it is not stopping anytime soon. Liquid hydrogen is more convenient because it is not thick or heavy, making it perfect for small fuel or engine tanks. We have always expressed the irritation of EVs and how refuelling just takes time. However, hydrogen takes minutes to do so, and that is why it stands out. This car is a motorsports vehicle; it needs to be refuelled in a space of just minutes to race again. Do you see the convenience? Toyota is racing and ahead of others that are still debating between EVs and gas.
