Korea and India have teamed up and the result could see the end of Tesla and BYD. In one of the biggest consumer markets in the world, Hyundai have formed a partnership with Indian Oil to test their new NEXO fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) on the streets of Delhi, India. The world is searching for the next sustainable fuel that can propel us into the future. Delhi is an ideal place to test the technology. Indian Oil will set up the required infrastructure for Hyundai to test their new hydrogen fuel cell on the chaotic streets of Delhi.
What is Hyundai’s hydrogen history? Do they have a history in the sector?
While the rest of the automotive sector is searching for the next fuel option, Hyundai have had their plans laid out for about 27 years already. They began their adventures into hydrogen in 2018 with hydrogen powered electric buses. From there they only seemed to be more focused on hydrogen. They decided to launch some cars for the public with their hydrogen fuel cell with the ix35 and NEXO.
They followed that by releasing the world’s first fuel cell heavy-duty truck, the XCIENT Fuel Cell. This showed the world that the technology was capable of much more than previously thought. Their trucks became operational in a range of countries around the globe, namely Europe and Korea, as well as in places like Israel, New Zealand, and Saudi Arabia.
Their commitment proved to be a masterful move. The world was all dumbfounded by the electric vehicle. The novelty was never going to last and soon the problems started to surface. Hyundai is now leaps and bounds ahead of their hydrogen interested competition. The project will be beneficial for the world as a whole and not just for Hyundai.
Will Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel cell work on the streets of Delhi?
The advancement in the hydrogen fuel sector has been promising recently. Since the world has began to swerve away from the EV dealership and look for a suitable alternative, companies like Hyundai have focused their resources and energy on finding the next best thing. They have made substantial investments in the hydrogen fuel cell technology, so much so that they want to test it in India of all places.
India has long been one of the world’s worst polluters, no doubt due to their population density. Which is even more dense in the urban environments where the majority of the citizens choose to stay. The pollution is legendary and the air quality is some of the worst on the planet. So the government of India knew that something had to be done.
So the partnership seems to be an obvious choice. The Indian government has incentivized the alternative fuel sector and the Koreans have chosen to take full advantage. Their new NEXO fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) began testing in 2024. The environment in Delhi is ideal for the testing. The infrastructure and car need to be in the optimal environments to get the best results.
Can the world make the transition away from gasoline to hydrogen?
While their compatriots are focused on other options, Hyundai have displayed their legendary wisdom and understanding of what the world really needs with this latest project. The hot, dusty streets of Delhi are an ideal test for the hydrogen fuel cell and the infrastructure needed to power it in a huge city. The world is ready to embrace the alternative fuel future that we have set out for ourselves. Even the new regulations in F1 require 50% alternative fuel source. So we all can holds thumbs for Hyundai and hope that this project is a success.
