Taxpayers in one state can celebrate as the announcement from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) states that a form of temporary tax relief will be offered. Taxpayers in one state can hold onto their tax returns for now as the IRS is offering some relief after the many natural disasters that these taxpayers underwent. This year featured news of storms, wildfires, and tornadoes in many states that started from March 14, 2025. The IRS is being lenient and giving taxpayers a chance to file their taxes by November 3, 2025.  Having more time to file their tax returns will be seen in a positive light by many taxpayers.

Filing taxes on a new date due to the deadline extension

A new tax deadline has been set for citizens in this state. The November 3, 2025, tax deadline will further alleviate some tax-associated burdens for taxpayers as well. Taxpayers in this state will also be offered a break from:

  • Filing the 2024 federal individual income tax returns and linked payments that were initially due on April 15, 2025.
  • Tax-exempt organization returns due on May 15, 2025.
  • Quarterly estimated income tax payments, originally due on April 15, June 17, and September 16, 2025.
  • Excise tax returns that are generally due on April 30, July 31, and October 31, 2025.

Alongside these extensions, all penalties for excise or payroll tax deposits due from March 14 and March 31, 2025, will be reduced. The idea behind this tax extension is not only to give citizens more time to file their taxes, but also to ensure that business owners can meet their short-term expenses while building up profits.

What action do taxpayers in the state have to take?

An important point to note is that the tax extension is automatic. If individuals and business owners are unsure of whether they qualify for this automatic extension, they need to check with the IRS. It is essential for taxpayers to provide the IRS with their correct location details and to inform the IRS as soon as details like their physical address change, as an incorrect address could hinder a person’s ability to automatically qualify for such tax extensions.

As it stands, taxpayers situated outside of disaster-affected regions but who have records within disaster-affected regions will also automatically qualify. Citizens who feel they should also qualify but do not reside in this affected state should contact the IRS Disaster Hotline at 866-562-5227 to state the reasons for requesting tax relief.

Residents in this state ought to remember that while the federal tax deadline may have moved to later in the year, the state tax deadline may still apply. While the focus is on one particular state, the IRS continues to look into the matter and update the list of disaster-affected areas.

Which state is offering a tax deadline extension?

As per the IRS’s official statement on tax relief for Oklahomans, Oklahoma is one state that will be offered a tax deadline extension, too. This tax deadline extension is allowed as part of the IRS relief that is issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). As per the disaster declarations brought forward by FEMA, certain counties in Oklahoma have been deemed eligible for this tax extension.

As has been stated by FEMA, the affected counties in Oklahoma include:

  • Cleveland
  • Creek
  • Lincoln
  • Oklahoma
  • Pawnee
  • Payne.

Residents residing in these regions do not have to apply for a tax deadline extension. The IRS uses taxpayers’ zip codes to award this extension automatically. Citizens residing in disaster areas outside of these mentioned areas can contact the IRS to apply for this deadline extension.

In Oklahoma, many eligible counties in the states of Missouri and Florida were even allowed a tax deadline extension. Recovery efforts in such states can now be focused on without the added pressure of submitting a federal tax return immediately.
