    • Was also an end on the football team for head coaches Clyde Littlefield and Jack Chevigny
  • Took over as head coach in 1936 at just 25 years old, leading the Longhorns for a total of 12 seasons
    • Coached from 1936-42 and 1945-51, interrupted by his military service in World War II
    • Went 194-97 overall, won three SWC titles and went to the postseason three times (2 NCAA, 1 NIT)
      • His 1946-47 team reached the NCAA Final Four, the second such appearance for the Longhorns
    • Also served as an assistant football from 1935-41 and 1946-49 (under Dana Bible and Blair Cherry)
  • Inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor in 1960 for his contributions as a player and coach
