Jack Murphy resigns, Shane Burcar tabbed as interim head coach at Northern Arizona

In a statement late Sunday, Northern Arizona AD Mike Marlow announced the resignation of head men’s basketball coach Jack Murphy and the appointment of Shane Burcar as interim replacement. Murphy is returning to his alma mater, Arizona, to be Sean Miller‘s associate head coach.

Murphy was 78-149 in seven seasons at NAU. The highlight of his tenure was the 2014-15 campaign, in which the Lumberjacks went 23-15 and finished as CIT Runners-up. However, Murphy’s teams failed to finish .500 or better in any of the other six seasons he was at the helm.

“NAU Athletics is grateful to [Murphy] for his work ethic, dedication and passion for the game of basketball,” Marlow said in a release. “We wish him and his wonderful family the very best as they return to a program and university that they all care about deeply.”

Burcar joined the NAU staff last summer after 12 seasons as the head coach at Mesa HS (AZ). This will be his first collegiate head coaching opportunity.

“We are fortunate to have a coach with Shane’s basketball acumen to lead our program as Interim Head Coach,” said Marlow. “As has been our practice, we will put all of our efforts into the success of this season and conduct a thorough review of the program at the conclusion of the 2019-20 campaign.”
