- Was a student manager under Hall of Fame head coach Lute Olson for four years at Arizona
- Spent four more seasons working for the program in various capacities, including spending the 2005-06 season as DBO
- Hired in 2006 to be on George Karl’s staff with the NBA’s Denver Nuggets; stayed with the team for three seasons
- Joined Josh Pastner‘s staff at Memphis in 2009, working as one of his assistants for the next three seasons
- Pastner played at Arizona and worked as an assistant there while Murphy was with the program
- Was hired in April 2012 to be the head coach of the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks
- Inherited a team that won just 5 games in 2011-12 and was able to win 23 games and finish as CIT runner-up in 2015, his third year
- Stepped down in June 2019 to become the associate head coach on Sean Miller‘s staff at alma mater Arizona
- After Miller was fired in April 2021, Murphy was as retained in his role by new head coach Tommy Lloyd – the program moved to the Big 12 ahead of the 2024-25 season
