Alma Mater: Ferrum College (BS, 1993)
Three-year starter at Ferrum (VA), named defensive POY three times and won two conference titles
- Inducted into the Ferrum College Athletic Hall of Fame (class of 2009)
Started coaching at his alma mater, spending two years as an assistant there
Was an assistant for one year under Ron Carr at Longwood, then one year at Hargrave Military Academy (VA)
Served as an assistant coach at numerous D-I programs over the next 15 years, working under Jeff Capel II for three years at ODU, Mark Simons for two years at Elon, Tom Herrion for one year at College of Charleston, Ed DeChellis for two years at Penn State, Jim Larrañaga for two years at George Mason and Seth Greenberg for five years at Virginia Tech
- During that time, Johnson was part of one NCAA Tournament (GMU’s historic 2006 Final Four run) and six NITs
Took over as the Hokies’ head coach upon Greenberg’s firing in 2012, leading the program for two years
- Went just 22-41 over those two seasons and was let go in 2014
Rejoined Larrañaga in 2015, spending two years as his Director of Basketball Operations (DBO) at Miami (FL)
Hired at NC State in 2017 by Kevin Keatts, his former teammate at Ferrum, and spent five seasons on staff there
Returned to Virginia Tech in 2023, accepting the role of Director of High School Relations with the Hokies’ football program
