  • The son of long-time collegiate coach Jeff Capel II and the younger brother of college coach Jeff Capel III
  • Grew up in North Carolina during his father’s coaching career but attended high school in Virginia while Jeff II was coaching at Old Dominion; Jason played at Indian River HS and was Virginia Mr. Basketball in 1996
  • Played collegiately at North Carolina for head coaches Bill Guthridge and Matt Doherty; was twice All-ACC Third Team
    • Helped lead the Tar Heels to three NCAA Tournaments, including a trip to the Final Four in 2000
  • Spent two seasons (2002-04) in the D-League playing for his father with the Fayetteville Patriots
    • Also played overseas in Japan (2004-05), Italy (2005-06) and Serbia (2007)
  • Joined the coaching staff of fellow Tar Heel Buzz Peterson at Appalachian State in 2009
    • Just one year later was elevated to head coach following Peterson‘s departure to Tulsa
    • Went 16-15 (10-8) in his first year but finished below .500 in the next three seasons and failed to reach the postseason; fired in 2014 after the Mountaineers went just 9-21 (5-11)
  • Rejoined the coaching ranks in 2018 when he was hired to be an assistant at Pittsburgh by his brother, Jeff
