- Alma Mater: University of Iowa (BA, 1995) / Western Illinois University (MA, 1998)
- Was a walk-on at Iowa, spending four seasons on the Hawkeyes where he was coached by Tom Davis
- Started his career as an assistant coach and SID at Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania
- Joined Bruce Pearl‘s staff at Milwaukee in 2001 as DBO and was elevated to assistant coach in 2003
- Followed Pearl to Tennessee in 2005, spending six seasons as an assistant coach with the Vols
- In 10 years with Pearl, Shay was part of eight NCAA Tournaments and five conference regular season titles
- After Pearl was fired in 2011, Shay joined the staff of his fellow Tennessee assistant Steve Forbes at Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, FL; the Raiders were in 62-6 in the two seasons that Forbes and Shay were there
- Hired by Brian Jones in 2013 to be an assistant coach at North Dakota, coaching at UND for two seasons
- Reunited with Forbes in 2015, becoming an assistant coach at East Tennessee State
- After five successful years in which the Bucs were 130-43 and won two SoCon titles, Forbes left for Wake Forest and Shay was tabbed to be the Bucs’ next head coach
- In March 2021, Shay resigned from his position after just one season; the Bucs went 13-12 in the COVID-shortened season
- Again reunited with Steve Forbes in 2021, joining his coaching staff at Wake Forest
