Alma Mater: Indiana University (BA, 1941)
Graduated from Frankfort HS (IN), where he was an All-State guard and won an Indiana state championship in 1936
Played for head coaches Everett Dean and Branch McCracken at Indiana; won a NCAA title with the Hoosiers in 1940
- Served in the US Army during World War II and began his coaching career after the War
Spent two years working under the Hall of Famer McCracken at Indiana as an assistant coach
Hired in 1949 to be the head coach at DePauw (IN), going 25-10 over two seasons as the helm
Took over as head coach at Muncie Central HS (IN), winning a state title in 1952
- In 1954, his Bearcats lost to Milan HS in the state championship; Milan’s title inspired the movie Hoosiers
Hired by LSU in 1957 to be the head coach, leading the Tigers for the next eight years
- Went 82-115 overall before he was replaced in 1965 by Frank Truitt
Came back in 1966 to be one an assistant, coaching at LSU for another six years under Truitt and Press Maravich
Passed away in 1995 at the age of 77, still living in Baton Rouge
