  • Hometown: Elwood, Indiana
  • Alma Mater: Indiana University (BA, 1941)
  • Graduated from Frankfort HS (IN), where he was an All-State guard and won an Indiana state championship in 1936
  • Played for head coaches Everett Dean and Branch McCracken at Indiana; won a NCAA title with the Hoosiers in 1940
    • Served in the US Army during World War II and began his coaching career after the War
  • Spent two years working under the Hall of Famer McCracken at Indiana as an assistant coach
  • Hired in 1949 to be the head coach at DePauw (IN), going 25-10 over two seasons as the helm
  • Took over as head coach at Muncie Central HS (IN), winning a state title in 1952
    • In 1954, his Bearcats lost to Milan HS in the state championship; Milan’s title inspired the movie Hoosiers
  • Hired by LSU in 1957 to be the head coach, leading the Tigers for the next eight years
    • Went 82-115 overall before he was replaced in 1965 by Frank Truitt
  • Came back in 1966 to be one an assistant, coaching at LSU for another six years under Truitt and Press Maravich
  • Passed away in 1995 at the age of 77, still living in Baton Rouge
