  • Played football (quarterback) and basketball at New Mexico A&M, serving as latter’s team captain under coach R. R. Brown
  • Returned to his alma mater, Las Cruces HS (NM), to coach both football and basketball in the late 1920s
  • Hired to coach both sports at his other alma mater, New Mexico A&M, in 1929
    • Was 157-109 in twelve total seasons with the basketball program, winning four-straight Border titles from 1937-40
    • Went 54-36-10 in eleven seasons with the football team, going to the first-ever Sun Bowl in 1935
    • Also served as the school’s athletic director from 1929-40 and 1946-47
  • His tenures as AD and basketball coach were separated by World War II, during which Hines was a commander in the New Mexico National Guard
    • Served in Africa, Sicily and Italy, first called into duty in September 1940 with the 45th Infantry Division
  • Inducted into the New Mexico State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1970 and the Aggie Basketball Ring of Honor in 2009
  • Passed away in 1963 at the age of 63 in Albuquerque
