- James A. Calhoun
- Born May 10, 1942
- Hometown: Braintree, Massachusetts
- Alma Mater: American International College (BS, 1968)
- Received a basketball scholarship to Lowell State (now UMass Lowell) but left after three months to work and support his family
- Played basketball at American International from 1965-1968, serving as team captain in ’67-68
- Immediately began his coaching career after graduation, coaching (and teaching) at Lyme-Old Lyme HS in Connecticut
- Next coaching jobs were at Westport HS and Dedham HS, both in his home state of Massachusetts
- Became the head coach at Northeastern in 1972, holding that position for 14 seasons (1972-86)
- During his tenure at Northeastern, the program transitioned from Division II to Division I (in 1979) as a member of what would later be known as the America East Conference
- Following a run of five America East titles and NCAA Tournament bids in six seasons, Calhoun left Northeastern to become the head coach at Connecticut in the Big East Conference
- In 26 years at UConn, Calhoun’s Huskies teams won ten Big East titles, one NIT Championship and an impressive three NCAA National Championships (1999, 2011, 2014)
- Retired in 2012 with 879 career victories as a head coach, 625 of which came while at UConn
- Calhoun is one of just five college head coaches with 3 National Championships, alongside Adolph Rupp (Kentucky), John Wooden (UCLA), Bob Knight (Indiana), and Mike Krzyzewski (Duke)
- Has been very active with the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, serving for many years as the organization’s Honorary Chairman
- Came out of retirement in 2018, taking over as head coach of the newly launched men’s basketball program at Division III Saint Joseph in West Hartford, CT
- In the second year of the program, Calhoun’s team went 26-3 and reached the (later cancelled) D-III NCAA Tournament
- After winning the first three games of the season, Calhoun officially retired from coaching and turned things over to Glen Miller
- Along with his wife, Pat, has two sons and six grandchildren
