  • Alma Mater: New York University (BA, 1932)
  • McDermott was the third-ever head men’s basketball coach at Iona College, leading the Gaels for 26 seasons and going 320-252
    • Also served as the first-ever athletic director at the school, holding that title from 1952-76
    • Coached the Iona baseball team from 1947-1963
    • Worked as Assistant to the President for Athletic Affairs and as an advisor to the athletic department from 1976-80
    • Inducted into the Iona College Arrigoni Hall of Fame as part of the inaugural 1982 class
  • McDermott was also the MAAC‘s first commissioner, serving in that capacity from 1980 to 1984
