  • Jimmy Tubbs, Jr.
  • Born February 16, 1950
  • Died May 9, 2009
  • Hometown: Oakwood, Texas
  • Alma Mater: Bishop College (BA, 1972) / Prairie View A&M University (M.Ed, 1976)
  • Started his coaching career at Kimball HS in Dallas, TX, serving as head coach for eight years
    • Went 232-42 overall and in 1990 led the team to a UIL Class 5A state championship title
    • Named District COY five times, Metroplex COY twice and was named Texas HS Boys’ COY in 1990
  • Joined the staff at SMU as an assistant in 1990, serving in that role for twelve seasons under John Shumate and Mike Dement
    • Was part of the Mustangs’ 1993 SWC title and NCAA Tournament, plus a trip to the NIT in 2000
  • Left SMU in 2002 and spent the next two seasons on Kelvin Sampson‘s staff at Oklahoma
  • Returned to SMU in 2004 when he was hired as head coach, replacing Dement
    • Went 27-30 over two seasons, one each in the WAC and Conference USA
    • Fired in April 2006 amidst an investigation into numerous recruiting and coaching violations
  • Passed away in May 2009 at the age of 60; survived by his son, Andrew
