- Joseph Dale Cravens
- Born March 9, 1954
- Hometown: Scottsburg, Indiana
- Alma Mater: University of Texas at Arlington (BA, 1977)
- The Indiana-native spent two years at Brunswick JC (GA) before playing for two seasons at Texas-Arlington for head coach Barry Dowd
- Started his coaching career at his alma mater, spending five seasons (in two separate stints) assisting Bob “Snake” LeGrand
- In between stints, Cravens worked as an assistant under Dan Wall at (Southwest) Texas State for three seasons
- Headed out West in 1985, spending the next four seasons as an assistant under Andy Russo at Washington
- Joined Rick Majerus‘ staff at Utah in 1989; was thrust into the role of interim head coach in his first season when Majerus had to take a medical leave of absence, Cravens led the Utes to a 12-12 (7-9 WAC) record
- Remained at Utah as an assistant coach for three more seasons before getting hired by Idaho in 1993
- Went 42-41 in three seasons as the Vandals’ head coach; after going 18-10 in his first year, Cravens’ teams won just 12 games in each of the next two
- Went overseas to coach in Switzerland for the summer after getting let go by Idaho in 1996
- Spent one season as an assistant at UC Irvine under Ron Baker before joining Ron Abegglen‘s staff at Weber State in 1997
- Was an assistant for two seasons, with the Wildcats going 25-8 and winning the Big Sky in 1999
- Elevated to head coach following Abegglen‘s resignation in 1999 and led the Wildcats for the next seven seasons
- Compiled an overall record of 116-88, highlighted by the 2002-03 season when he won the Big Sky and reached the NCAA Tournament
- After Weber State, Cravens spent some time coaching the girl’s team at Saint Joseph Catholic HS in Ogden, Utah
- He also worked as a college basketball analyst for the MountainWest Sports Network (folded in 2012)
