- Played basketball for the Illinois Fighting Illini under head coach Craig Ruby
- While at Illinois, Mauer was roommates with Hall of Fame halfback Red Grange
- After graduation, spent one year coaching football, basketball and track at his alma mater, Batavia HS
- Moved up to the college ranks in 1927 as the head basketball coach at Kentucky; over the next 33 years he would also coach at Miami (OH), Tennessee, Army and Florida
- Spent four years coaching baseball (1938-42) and eight years coaching football (1938-46) at Tennessee while simultaneously coaching the basketball team
- For all nine of his years at Florida, Mauer coached basketball and was the defensive backs coach for the Gators football team
- Returned to Tennessee in 1960, this time to only coach on the football team (defensive backs) for three more seasons
- Spent the later years of his career as a scout in the NFL, including time working for Vince Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers
- Inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame posthumously in 2002
- Mauer passed away in Knoxville at the age of 77; survived by his wife, Grace, two sons and five grandchildren
