Johnny Jones hired as new Texas Southern head coach

Former LSU, North Texas and Memphis head coach Johnny Jones has been hired as the new head coach at Texas Southern. Jones spent last season at Nevada on the staff of one of his own former LSU assistants, Eric Musselman.

Jones joins a program that won four SWAC regular seasons in the last six years under former head coach Mike Davis. Davis, who took the Detroit job earlier this month, led Texas Southern to four NCAA Tournaments in six years by way of SWAC Tournament titles.

In Jones, Texas Southern is getting another head coach with experience on the big stage. Though many would view his tenure at LSU as a disappointment, Jones has had success at the mid-major level. He won the Sun Belt in 2010 and took North Texas to the NCAA Tournament in both 2007 and 2010.
