- Played at TCU for long-time head coach Buster Brannon, then joined his coaching staff in 1956
- In his years playing for and coaching under Brannon, Swaim was part of three NCAA Tournaments (including two Sweet Sixteens) and four Southwest titles
- Elevated to head coach at his alma mater in 1967 following Brannon‘s retirement
- Went 102-151 in ten seasons at the helm, highlighted by two NCAA Tournament bids and Southwest titles in his first four seasons
- Finished below .500 in each of his final five seasons, culminating in a 3-23 (0-16 SWC) record in 1976-77 that led to his resignation as head coach
- Remaining in the Fort Worth area working in the private sector
- Passed away in 1995; survived by his wife, Joan, and their children, Mike and Susie, all TCU grads
