OFFICIAL: Jon Scheyer named head-coach-in-waiting at Duke
Following the announcement of Mike Krzyzewski‘s impending retirement, Duke also announced that associate head coach Jon Scheyer will be the successor starting April 2022.
Scheyer was a four-year starter at Duke, winning a NCAA title in 2010 as a senior before embarking on a professional career overseas. He has been back at his alma mater since 2013 and was a part of another NCAA title in 2015 as an assistant coach.
The belief has always been that Coach K’s replacement would be someone within the Duke family and Scheyer certainly fits the bill. He may not have any head coaching experience, but he’s spent many years within the program and is certainly ready to make the leap to head coach. Duke certainly struck gold the last time it hired a 30-something coach who hailed from Chicago.
