Jonas Hayes hired as new head coach at Georgia State

Former Xavier assistant and interim head coach Jonas Hayes has been hired to be the new head man at Georgia State, the school announced on Wednesday. Hayes is coming off a 4-0 run as interim leader at XU during which the team won the 2022 NIT Championship.

“I’m excited to announce Jonas Hayes as our new men’s basketball head coach,” AD Charlie Cobb said in a statement. “Over the past week, we interviewed multiple coaches excited about the opportunity to lead the Georgia State program. Jonas is an experienced leader who will build a staff that embraces our expectation of competitive success, develops men of character and engages our community positively and with energy.”

Hayes was born in Atlanta, played at Georgia and also coached there for six years before getting hired at Xavier in 2018. He also coached at South Carolina State, Belmont Abbey and Morehouse earlier in his career.

Jonas’ twin brother, Jarvis, played with him in college and embarked on a professional career before getting into coaching himself. Jarvis has been an assistant at Georgia State for the past three seasons and it looks like he will stay on board to work with his brother.
