Justin Gray
Born March 31, 1984
Hometown: Charlotte, North Carolina
Alma Mater: Wake Forest University (BA, 2006)
Spent three years at West Charlotte HS (NC) before spending his final year at Oak Hill Academy (VA), where he was roommates and teammates with future NBA star Carmelo Anthony
Went on to play for Skip Prosser at Wake Forest for four seasons; went to three NCAA Tournaments and one NIT with the Deacons
- The 2002-03 team won an ACC title and the 2003-04 team, featuring Chris Paul, reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen
- Was First-Team All-ACC as a sophomore in 2004 and then Second-Team All-ACC in both 2005 and 2006
Spent 12 years playing professionally overseas, including stints in Belgium, Czech Republic, Greece, Ukraine, China, Germany, France, Turkey, Beirut, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Belarus and Romania
Started his coaching career in 2019 as an assistant at Winthrop under Pat Kelsey, who was an assistant at WF during Gray’s playing career
- The Eagles won back-to-back Big South regular season and Big South Tournament titles in 2020 and 2021, reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2021 (the 2020 event was cancelled)
- Initially followed Kelsey to the College of Charleston in April 2021 before getting the Western Carolina job
Hired in April 2021 as the new head coach at Western Carolina, replacing Mark Prosser – the son of his former coach, Skip Prosser – who had accepted the job at Winthrop to replace Kelsey
