- Played at then-Division II CSU Bakersfield for four seasons under head coach Pat Douglass
- Began coaching career at his alma mater, spending two seasons as an assistant under Henry Clark
- Continued at the high school level, leading the Bakersfield HS Drillers for four seasons
- After one season on Kevin Bromley’s staff at Cal Poly, Hutson was hired by SDSU head coach Steve Fisher in 2006
- Stayed on Fisher‘s staff for five seasons before spending two years as associate head coach at UNLV under Dave Rice
- Returned to SDSU in 2013, spending three more seasons as an assistant under Fisher
- Elevated to associate head coach in 2017 under new Aztecs head coach Brian Dutcher
- Hired in April 2018 to become the next head coach at Fresno State
- Led the Bulldogs to 23 wins in his first season, earning the Joe B. Hall Award as the nation’s top first-year head coach
- In 2022, Hutson and the Bulldogs won the inaugural The Basketball Classic title (normally branded as the CIT)
- Was let go in March 2024 following a second-straight 20+ loss season; Huston went 92-94 overall in six seasons
