Karl Dorrell fired after 0-5 start at Colorado, went just 8-15 overall

Colorado has fired head football coach Karl Dorrell, the school announced on Sunday. The Buffs are 0-5 to start the season and were 8-15 in two-plus years under Dorrell.

“I want to thank Karl for his hard work in leading our program since 2020,” AD Rick George said in a statement. “Ultimately, however, the results on the field just did not measure up to our expectations and standards, which made it necessary for us to make this change at this time.  It was an extremely difficult decision and I wish Karl all of the best in his future endeavors.”

Dorrell started his tenure with 4-straight wins, as the Buffs finished the COVID-shortened 2020 season 4-2 with a lopsided loss to Texas in the Alamo Bowl. Things got worse from there, as they went 4-8 last year and have yet to win in 2022, getting outscored 67-216 in five games.

First-year offensive coordinator Mike Sanford Jr. will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Sanford previously spent two seasons (2017-18) as the head coach at Western Kentucky, going 9-16 overall, and came to Boulder this offseason after serving as OC at Minnesota for the previous two years.
