- Alma Mater: St. Mary’s University (BA, 1971) / Northern Arizona University (MA)
- Started his coaching career with a three-year stint assisting Bob LeGrande at Texas-Arlington
- Joined Lute Olson’s staff at Iowa in 1979, working there for four years plus three more at Arizona
- With Olson, Burmeister was part of six NCAA Tournaments (including the Hawkeyes’ 1980 Final Four)
- Hired in 1986 to be the head coach at UTSA, leading the Roadrunners for four seasons
- Went 72-44 overall with two 22-win seasons, the first of which included a NCAA bid and TAAC Tournament title
- Moved back to his native Midwest in 1990, spending four seasons assisting Joey Meyer at DePaul
- From there, Burmeister was hired to be the head coach at Loyola Chicago
- Led the Ramblers for four seasons, going 40-71 overall at the helm
- Fired in 1998 following a 15-15 season, the best record of his tenure and only above .500 season
- Was head coach at D-III Trinity (TX) for one year, going 16-9 at the SCAC school
- For the next seven years, Burmeister worked in the private sector and living in San Antonio, TX
- Hired in 2006 to take over as head coach at Incarnate Word, then a Division II program
- Compiled a 202-138 record over 12 seasons as head coach, the last five at the Division I level
- Won back-to-back Heartland titles to reach the D-II NCAA Tournament in both 2009 and 2010
- The program moved to the D-I Southland in 2013 and went 21-6 (9-5) in their first season at that level
- Reached the CIT in 2015, the program’s first-ever Division I postseason berth
- After two-straight losing seasons, Burmeister was fired as head coach in March 2018
- Passed away in 2020 at the age of 72 from cancer; survived by his wife, Brenda, and their two children
