Kenny Blakeney introduced as new Howard head coach

The news may have broke last week, but Howard officially introduced Kenny Blakeney as the Bison’s new head coach on Monday. This is the first head coaching opportunity for Blakeney, a DC-native and former Duke Blue Devil who has had a long career in and around basketball.

“Kenny comes from a rich basketball pedigree having played for and coached under many of the best coaches in the history of the sport of basketball,” AD Kery Davis said in a release. “Kenny’s unique talents on and off the floor, his association with winning programs, and his innovative mind for business make him the right person to lead our program now and into the future.”

Blakeney spent the last season as an assistant at Columbia, returning to coaching after six years away from the game. Prior to that, he worked as an assistant at Harvard, Marshall, Delaware, St. Bonaventure, La Salle and James Madison.

“From All-American student-athlete to coaching the game alongside a stellar line-up of basketball leaders to becoming a distinguished mentor in his own right, Kenny brings a new level of energy and excitement to our program,” University President Wayne A. I. Frederick said. “I look forward to watching our student-athletes excel in the classroom, on the court and in the most important game, LIFE!”

With Duke in the early 1990s, Blakeney was a member of Mike Krzyzewski‘s first two NCAA championship teams. Before that, he played for another Hall of Fame coach, Morgan Wootten, at famed DeMatha Catholic HS.
