  • John Kermit Davis, Sr.

  • Played baseball and basketball at Mississippi State, the latter for head coach Babe McCarthy
  • Spent four seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater under head coach Joe Dan Gold
  • Elevated to head coach in 1970, leading the Bulldogs to an even 91-91 record in seven seasons at the helm
    • Improved from 6-18 in Gold’s last year to 15-10 in his first year and earned 1971 AP SEC Coach of the Year honors
    • Finished above .500 three times, including his final season 1976-77, but was let go by the school that year
    • Worked for the school later on in a fundraising capacity through the Bulldog Club
  • His son, Kermit Davis, Jr., also played a Mississippi State and embarked on a college coaching career
