- Hometown: Magna, Utah
- Alma Mater: Southern Utah University (BA, 1977)
- Graduated from Cyprus HS (UT) where he was All-American in basketball and all-state in football
- Played basketball for two years at Utah State for head coaches T.L. Plain and Dutch Belnap
- Transferred to Southern Utah in 1974, where he finished his degree and career, playing for coach Stan Jack
- Started his coaching career at the high school level in Utah, serving as head boys’ basketball coach at Unitah HS (1978-79) and Murray HS (1979-82); worked as an assistant football coach for four years (1982-86) at Salt Lake City East HS, then four years as an assistant basketball coach followed by ten years as head basketball coach (1990-2000)
- Won four region titles and appeared in two state championship games; served as AD at East HS from 1992-2000
- Hired by Rick Majerus in 2000 to be an assistant at Utah, serving in that role for the next three and a half seasons
- Part of two NCAA Tournaments (2002 and 2003) and one MWC title (2003) as an assistant
- Served as interim head coach for the last 13 games of the 2003-04 season, leading the Utes to their first-ever MWC Tournament title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament
- Joined Mike Davis‘ staff at Indiana in 2004, spending the next two seasons as the Hoosiers’ associate head coach
- Followed Davis to UAB after his 2006 firing and spent one season with the Blazers as an assistant coach
- Hired in 2007 to be the head coach at Louisiana Tech, spending four seasons in that role
- Went 57-73 overall, highlighted by a 24-11 record and CIT appearance in 2009-10
- Fired in 2011 after going 12-20 (2-14), his third sub-.500 season in four years at the helm
- Spent one year on Gib Arnold’s staff at Hawaii as director of basketball operations
- Worked under Wayne Tinkle for the next ten years, two at Montana (2012-14) and eight at Oregon State (2014-22)
- Was part of three NCAA Tournaments with Tinkle, including the Beavers’ surprise Elite Eight run in 2021
- In March 2022, Oregon State announced that Rupp’s contract would not be renewed
