- Started his coaching career in 1991 at Columbia Union, serving as women’s head coach for three seasons and also as a men’s assistant for one
- Led the women’s team to the NAIA Playoffs in each of his three seasons at the helm
- First tenure at Howard was a three-year stint as an assistant under head coach Mike McLeese
- Spent time working as an assistant at various other Division I programs, including time under Dave Calloway (Monmouth), Ralph Willard (Holy Cross), Bobby Lutz (Charlotte) and Oliver Purnell (Clemson)
- Became the head coach at Hampton in 2006, going 49-44 in three seasons with the Pirates
- Was the head coach of the Libya National Basketball Team from 2009-10
- Hired as the head basketball coach of the Howard Bison in 2010
- Had 96 wins and one postseason appearance (2019 CBI) during his tenure
- Fired in March 2019 after nine seasons at the helm, going 96-194 overall
- In July 2019, Nickelberry joined Will Wade‘s staff at LSU as assistant to the head coach; elevated to assistant coach before the 2020-21 season
