  • The TX-native played his college basketball for head coach Brad Holland and the San Diego Toreros
    • Was team captain for two years (1997-99) and was twice named the team’s Defensive POY
  • Started his coaching career in 1991, spending two seasons as a graduate assistant at Saint Louis under Lorenzo Romar
  • Headed West in 2001 with fellow SLU staffer Randy Bennett, spending the next six years as an assistant at Saint Mary’s
  • Next up were a one-year stint under Kerry Keating at Santa Clara and four years under Herb Sendek at Arizona State
    • While at ASU, Smith helped coach and develop future NBA MVP James Harden
  • Reunited with Romar for one season (2012-13) in Washington, then assisted Craig Neal for two years at New Mexico
  • Hired in the 2015 to be the head coach at alma mater, San Diego, leading the Toreros until 2018
    • Went 40-52, including a 18-13 in his third year, but was placed on administrative leave in February 2018 after getting arrested at Oakland (CA) International Airport on charges of domestic violence
      • The Toreros were invited to the 2018 CIT, going 2-1 under assistant Sam Scholl (who became head coach after the season)
    • He was released and the charges were dropped a week later in early March, but Smith officially resigned from his position
  • He was hired in April 2018 to be an assistant coach at UTEP under new head coach Rodney Terry
    • Resign following the season after he was implicated in a larger college admissions bribery scandal from his time at USD
