- Alma Mater: University of Idaho (BS, 1992)
- Father was McGlother “Mac” Irvin, founder of the Mac Irvin Fire AAU team and know as “The Godfather” of Chicago basketball
- Has four brothers, all of which are involved in basketball, and one sister that works in education in Chicago
- Brother Mike runs the Mac Irvin Fire program while brother Nick is the head varsity coach at Chicago’s Morgan Park HS
- All-city, all-area and all-state as a senior at Julian HS in Chicago
- Started his collegiate career at Colorado State before transferring to Idaho, where he played for coach Larry Eustachy
- Began his coaching career at Idaho as a graduate assistant before returning to Chicago to be one of Joey Meyer‘s assistants at DePaul for five seasons
- Over the next fourteen years, Irvin held a number of assistant coaching positions across the country:
- Coached under Larry Farmer (Loyola IL), Eustachy (Iowa State), Tom Richardson (Illinois State), Melvin Watkins (Texas A&M), Quin Snyder (Missouri), Matt Doherty (SMU) and Chris Lowery (Southern Illinois)
- Spent five seasons coaching at Morgan Park HS in Chicago on brother Nick Irvin’s staff
- Returned to the college ranks in August 2018 when he was hired to take over as head coach at Chicago State
- Due to his health and COVID-19 concerns, Irvin opted out of in-person coaching for the 2020-21 season
- Nine games in (the Cougars were 0-9), the program shut down for the rest of the season citing safety concerns
- In July 2021, Irvin and Chicago State announced their decision to part ways
- Has battled leukemia for several years, receiving a bone marrow transplant in 2012; in remission as of 2020
- Along with his wife, Paula, has one daughter
