Longtime college head coach Billy Tubbs dies at 85

Billy Tubbs, perhaps best remembered for his 14-year tenure at Oklahoma during which he led the Sooners to a NCAA Runner-Up finish in 1988, has passed away Sunday after a battle with leukemia. Tubbs was 85 years old.

In addition to his time at OU, Tubbs had three stints (two as head coach) at Lamar, eight seasons at TCU and two years at D-III Southwestern (TX). He won 641 games in his career as a head coach, 333 of them coming with the Sooners.

The four-time Big Eight COY moved back to Norman, OK after retiring as Lamar’s AD in 2011.
