  • Born to a Jewish family, Goetz was a star basketball player at Passiac HS (NJ) under head coach Dick Tarrant
  • Went on to home state school Rutgers, where he played for the Scarlet Knights and head coach Bill E. Foster
  • Hired by Foster in 1971 to be one of his assistant coaches at Utah, spending three seasons in Salt Lake City
  • Became a head coach at age 32 was he was hired to lead the Richmond Spiders’ program in 1978
    • Went 38-44 in three seasons, improving win totals each year after taking over a team that went 4-22
    • Resigned in June 1981 to join the private sector and spend more time with his wife and young daughter
    • Turned the program over to eventual 4x CAA COY Tarrant, whom he had hired as one of his own assistants
  • Worked in property development and real estate after coaching, settling back in the Raleigh, NC area
  • Passed away from cancer in 2021 at the age of 74; survived by his wife, Tracey, and their two children
