  • Born in Czechoslovakia, Guley’s family moved to New York when he was young and he grew up in Binghamton
    • Played baseball and basketball at Syracuse, lettering twice in the latter for head coach Lew Andreas
  • Played professional basketball for the Binghamton Triplets and Newark Elks
    • Served in the US Navy as a communications officer during World War II
  • Got started in coaching at the high school level, with stints in Delhi and Walton, NY
  • After spending some time as an assistant under Andreas, Guley became head coach in 1950
    • Led the Orange for 12 seasons, going 136-129 overall and finishing above .500 seven times
    • Highlights including taking SU to its first-ever NCAA Tournament in 1957
    • Was the first head coach to recruit black players to Syracuse, integrating the team
      • Among the players he coached were Vinnie Cohen and future football Hall of Famer Jim Brown
  • Resigned in 1962 and worked in Physical Education at Cazenovia Elementary School (NY) until retirement in 1980
  • Passed away in 1990 at the age of 78
