- Born January 20, 1964
- Hometown: Mobile, Alabama
- Alma Mater: University of Alabama (BA, 1987)
- Played at Oral Roberts (1983-84) and Alabama (1984-87); with the Tide he was coached by Wimp Sanderson
- Was drafted in the seventh round of the 1987 NBA Draft, but never played any professional basketball
- Spent eight seasons as an assistant at UCLA head coach Jim Harrick, and was on staff in 1995 when the Bruins won the NCAA National Championship
- First head coaching job was at Murray State, where he won 69 games and went to two NCAA Tournaments in three seasons
- Took over as head coach at his alma mater, Alabama, in 1998
- Led the Tide to five NCAA Tournaments (including one Elite Eight) and a runner-up finish in the 2001 NIT during his tenure
- Resigned from Alabama midway through the 2008-09 season and took some time away from coaching
- Hired in 2011 as the head coach at NC State
- Won 22+ games and went to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first four seasons at the helm in Raleigh, including two trips to the Sweet Sixteen
- Fired in February 2017 following two straight seasons without a postseason appearance
- Returned to coaching in March 2018 when he was introduced as the new head coach at Cal State Northridge
- In 2021, Gottfried and his staff were placed on paid administrative leave as the school investigated potential rules violations and then was later let go officially after three years at the helm; went 37-51 overall with the Matadors
