Mark Price fired as Charlotte head coach
Just eleven games into his third season at the school, Charlotte 49ers head coach Mark Price has been fired. The team will be coached on an interim basis by lead assistant Houston Fancher moving forward.
Price came to UNC-Charlotte in 2015 after spending seven seasons as an NBA assistant, most recently with the Charlotte Hornets. Before getting into coaching, Price was an NBA point guard who played 12 seasons with four different teams.
The Charlotte job was Price’s first head coaching position at the NCAA-level, having previously coached at Whitfield Academy in Atlanta and for one year with the South Dragons of Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL). It was first collegiate job of any kind since 2000, when he spent one season as an assistant to his college coach Bobby Cremins at Georgia Tech.
New interim head coach Fancher has been with the program since 2015, joining Price’s staff after a year at UNC Wilmington. Fancher spent nine seasons as the head coach at Appalachian State from 2000-09, finishing his tenure with a 137-136 record.
This is the second coaching change already this season in Conference USA, following Tim Floyd‘s abrupt resignation from UTEP in late November.
